Ich benutze es als Beispiel dafür, wie ich eine Geschichte erfinden möchte, die sich in meinem eigenen Schreiben entfalten kann. Eine ehrgeizige Verschmelzung von Geschichte und Fiktion!
Thomas Hardy does an amazing job with this book, setting up doubling and opposites as we head into the murky waters of class division, male and female power struggles, nonconsensual sex, and hatred that would drive someone to murder. Alec and Angel may appear to be two separate people, but their misogyny is astounding to a 21st century reader. The complex and constant tragedy of Tess' life is utterly heart-breaking and drives home the plight of the peasant even as late as the 1890's. The characters are developed well, the plot and judgment are subtle, and I found Hardy to be an inspired writer. His poetry is his strongsuit, but it can hardly be deemed a mistake that he tried his hand at a few novels.
