This is the book that first earned the author international acclaim, but truthfully, it wasn't my favorite. I like his weirder stuff that has an element of the supernatural or at least out-of-the-ordinary in it. Also, his main characters in almost all his books are starting to seem like the same person, and the same types keep appearing over and over in his books. I like the characters, so I don't mind seeing them again, but my point is to say that I think Murakami is a better storyteller than he is a character inventor. This is perfectly ok with me; it's just something I noticed.
