Thank you Elsa for this excellent suggestion. Moonstone is that l-o-n-g story that one can indeed get lost in. Especially in the longer first part which I feel has the strongest narration. The mystery is about the moonstone, not the personality of a single investigator or detective which I believe sets it apart. It plays out in one's imagination like a great old movie!
I really did like this. I wish I could say I completely understood it.. but then it felt very much like Alice in Wonderland. Much of it was based on nonsense words and a class/political system that is foreign to me. (And being an Anglophile, I didn't feel it was a very British class system, altho maybe too subtle for a non-Brit to pick up.) But Fforde and his sense of wordplay has me fully in his grip. I laughed quite a bit at the library scene. And I enjoyed the whole hierarchy of the Colortocracy. This is supposed to be a series of 3 books, and I wait with about as much impatience as I wait for his Thursday Next series.
